OrthoMedix provides custom fitting of orthopaedic devices when prescribed by a physician. Custom devices are available for a variety of functions. These require a cast impression, specific measurements and/or adjustments for the patient the device is prescribed for.
Custom knee braces require either a cast impression of the patient’s knee or measurements taken with a device provided by the brace manufacturer thus ensuring a custom fit for the patient. Some condition requiring a patient to wear a custom knee brace include; anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), injuries or instabilities, osteoarthritis, pre and post surgery requirements, certain genetic conditions, and, unsuitability for surgery among others.
Patients requiring post-op hip braces, hyperextension braces (Jewitt), TLSOs, and LSOs are fitted in our offices, at the hospital, or at home when the patient is bed-ridden (in metro Ottawa area). These require measurements, adjustments and fitting by our experts who explain proper use and installation to the patient and/or caregiver.
Other custom devices such as ankle foot orthosis (AFO), knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO), patella tendon bearing (PTB) brace, some hand and/or wrist splints require a cast impression of the affected area to fabricate a functional device . The function of each of these devices may vary and have specific uses. These are usually prescribed by a specialist.
The physician prescribes these devices with instructions for correction. Our technologists and technicians will advise the patient on proper application and wear of the device to ensue comfort, relief and protection for the affected limb.
